Hello,

A number of years ago, Mobipocket discontinued support for the development tool (SDK) we were using to create our ebooks. Unfortunately, the tools they currently offer are in no way similar to the SDK we've been relying on for the last 5+ years. To use the tools they currently have available would take a significant amount of work to rewrite all our code from using the old SDK to their new Mobigen tool. Unlike the SDK we had been using, Mobigen is a separate application, and that takes a lot more work to integrate with and test to make sure we properly handle any errors it reports. Using it the way we use the SDK is much less efficient and would add several seconds to the generation of each PQ which, given the number of PQs we process each day, would be detrimental to the performance of the PQ Generator.

We know many in the community have been enjoying and relying on the Mobipocket ebooks for their paperless caching experience and this news is disappointing. It is for us too. So while Mobipocket does have new development tools for creating their ebooks, they're just not suitable for the way we create PQs so unfortunately, there's no reasonable way for us to continue to support the Mobipocket ebook format.

The good news is that the Geocaching developer community has produced a number of great tools over the years which can convert the contents of a PQ's GPX file into something that can be used on nearly any device. Many people are finding that these tools not only offer similar functionality as the Mobipocket ebooks, but actually provide a superior experience. We list a number of these on our Waypoint Download page (http://www.geocaching.com/waypoints/) and you can also read about some of the suggestions in the Mobipocket forum topic starting here: (http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?s=&showtopic=171647&view=findpost&p=3051911).

We'll continue to monitor the forums and we'll update our Waypoint Download page to include tools that offer similar functionality.
