Mankind has been navigating on the sea and on land for more than 4 000 years. The metric system is only a little bit more than 200 years old. The present system used in navigation to express your position on the surface of the earth is based on an almost 2000-year-old system, established long before the metric system.
Here, we show that the use of metric units in navigation instead of the traditional units in navigation will facilitate calculations, education and training of staff. It will also help to avoid mistakes since no conversion to metric units, which are used in almost all other fields of application, is needed.
